The Role of Perception in Loanword Adaptation: Evidence from Nepali
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction: The research presents experimental data from Nepali to advocate for the perceptionbased analysis of loanword adaptation. There are three competing phonological processes for breaking consonant clusters (prothesis, anaptyxis and metathesis). Auditory discrimination experiments show that the selection of a phonological process (during production) is done such that there is maximum perceptual similarity between the input and the output. Hence, perceptual patterns in the source language influence the production behavior in loanwords. This proposal is in accord with the perceptionbased analysis of loanwords (Peperkamp & Dupoux 2003, Peperkamp 2005).

Russian Loanword Adaptation in Persian; Optimal Approach
In this paper we analyzed some of the phonological rules of Russian loanword adaptation in Persian, on the view of Optimal Theory (OT) (Prince and Smolensky, 1993, 2003). It is the first study of phonological process on Russian loanwords adaptation in Persian. By gathering about 50 current Russian loanwords, we selected some of them to analyze. We found out that vowel insertion, vowel prothesis...
متن کاملVowel-Epenthesis Patterns in Loanword Adaptation of Initial sC Clusters in Najdi Arabic
In this study, I investigate vowel epenthesis that arises in loanword adaptation in Najdi Arabic (NA), an Arabic dialect spoken in the middle region of Saudi Arabia. In addition, I present experimental data from NA, to advocate for the perception-based analysis of loanword adaptation, an approach early adopted by Fleishacker (2002). Based on acoustic and perceptual evidence, Fleishacker has fou...

Source-similarity effects in loanword adaptation are formalized in Correspondence Theory (McCarthy and Prince, 1995). A correspondence relation holds between the loanword and the pLs representation, the borrower’s posited representation of the source-language form; including the pLs representation in the model allows a consistent account of the interaction between phonological adaptation proces...
متن کاملThe symbiosis between perception and grammar in loanword phonology
This paper takes the view that loanword adaptation results from attempts to match the non-native percept of the L2 input, within the confines of the L1 grammar. Neither a purely perceptual nor a purely grammatical account can explain the facts. The L1 grammar includes constraints specific to mimicking foreign inputs. Where not all aspects can be replicated, the grammar prioritizes. In the Canto...
متن کاملAn evolutionary account of loanword-induced sound change in Japanese
Generative accounts of loanword phonology typically focus on the role of an individual speaker's grammar and/or perceptual biases in generating the phonological adaptations seen in loanwords. While these types of generative models can be successfully used to explain static synchronic patterns in loanword adaptations in terms of the set of existing constraints in the native phonology, it is more...
